NVIDIA ConnectX-7 NIC Endpoint (400G Mode) BlueField-3 DPU 400G Connectivity 800G-DR8 to 2x 400G-DR4 Breakout NIC-Side Medium-Reach 400G Spine-to-Leaf AI Training Cluster Server Aggregation GPU Pod to Spine Single-Mode Connectivity

Q: What is the 400G QSFP112 DR4 used for?
A: Most commonly as the NIC-side endpoint of an 800G-DR8 to 2x 400G-DR4 breakout from an OSFP-based switch into ConnectX-7 NICs in 400G mode. It also works for direct 400G-to-400G server-to-server or switch-to-switch links over SMF up to 500m.

Q: When should I choose DR4 vs FR4?
A: DR4 uses 4 parallel single-mode fibers (MPO-12) for 500m reach at lower per-port cost. FR4 uses CWDM over a single duplex LC fiber pair for 2km reach with simpler fiber management. DR4 is more common in compact AI clusters; FR4 is used for inter-hall connections.

Q: Is this validated on NVIDIA switches directly?
A: NVIDIA Spectrum and Quantum 400G+ switches use the OSFP form factor. QSFP112 is the NIC-side option for ConnectX-7 in 400G mode. For switch-side 400G on NVIDIA, use the Vitex 400G OSFP-RHS DR4 instead.

Q: What fiber and patch cable do I need?
A: Standard single-mode fiber with MPO-12 APC connectors. Transceiver ports are male (pinned), so patch cables must be female (unpinned). For 800G-DR8 to 2x 400G-DR4 breakouts, use a SMF MPO-12 to 2x MPO-12 breakout assembly.

Q: What is the typical use case in an AI cluster?
A: Spine switch (Vitex 800G DR8 OSFP) breaks out to two server NICs (Vitex 400G DR4 QSFP112) over a single MPO-12 to 2x MPO-12 SMF breakout cable. Common in GPU pods where the leaf switch sits 50-500m from the GPU racks.

Q: What is the link power budget at 500m?
A: 400G-DR4 per-lane budget is ~4.0 dB. A 500m run consumes ~0.2 dB of fiber attenuation plus ~0.7 dB across two MPO-12 APC connectors. Total ~0.9 dB - very comfortable budget. Always clean endfaces before mating.

Q: Why source 400G optics from Vitex?
A: Contact Vitex engineering for details on this configuration.

Great Customer Service. Good on time delivery.

Kimberly D.

Buyer at a large defense contractor

As a developer of medical systems, we are required to comply with EMC standards for medical devices. Vitex devices met this requirement every time we tested them. The other devices we tested did not even come close.

Jon

Engineering Manager at a leading medical systems company

You're the best, thanks a bunch to Vitex!
